'Nuncrackers' showcases uproarious lead-in to Christmas season
The Little Sisters of Hoboken have a TV special in mind. And from that concept, the hysterical story of ‘Nuncrackers’ was born.
‘Nuncrackers’ — a dinner theater production of the Summit Theatre Group — is the story of an inaugural special put on through cable access television. It’s a show full of holiday carols, a Secret Santa and a hilarious take on Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcracker Ballet.’
Summit Theatre Group director Ben Martin says this show will break all the rules.
“This season, STG has been noted for presenting high quality literature that added to the cultural landscape of Lee’s Summit,” Martin noted. “Nuncrackers will destroy that reputation in the first few minutes after the lights come up.
“In all seriousness, if that is possible with this show, we are just going to have a rollicking good time with Nuncrackers. There is a perfect mix of comedy and sweet sentimentality that will be a great lead-in to the Christmas season.”
The ‘Nuncrackers’ cast includes Diana Leonard (Blue Springs) as Reverend Mother; Kathleen Kettner (Independence) as Sister Hubert; Brittany Hill (Raymore) as Sister Robert Anne; Abbey Downs (Blue Springs) as Sister Mary Paul; Dana Reynolds (Lee’s Summit) as Sister Mary Leo; Kenny Taylor (Lee’s Summit) as Father Virgil Manly Trott; and the Children of Mount Saint Helen’s, Charity Harris, Christian Harris, Victoria Scheuer and Raleigh Wallace, all of Lee’s Summit.
“This cast has been great to work with,” Martin said. “During auditions we realized we had a lot of depth. In fact, the creative team all agreed we could have cast the show twice and not lost any of the level of performance we were looking for. The adult and youth performers are doing a bang-up job.”
‘Nuncrackers’ runs Dec. 14-16 at the MCC-Longview Cultural Arts Center, 500 SW Longview Road in Lee’s Summit. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. On Dec. 17, doors open at 12:30 p.m. and lunch is served at 1 p.m.
Tickets for ‘Nuncrackers’ are $45 ($40 for students and seniors) and available online. This special dinner theater ticket includes meal and dessert.
