Summit Christian Academy (SCA) recently named sixth grade teacher Verna Green as SCA’s 2017 Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made recently at an all-school assembly.

Parents, students, and staff had the opportunity to nominate a teacher who has shown excellence in fulfilling SCA’s mission to “inspire students to achieve their God-given potential through excellent academics and Christian training in a compassionate environment.” Of the 31 teachers nominated, six were selected as finalists. Finalists included Secondary Social Studies Teacher Greg Finch, Secondary Math Teacher Matt Shelton, Elementary Vocal Music Teacher Angy Bounds, Secondary Vocal Music Teacher Trissa Lucht, Secondary Social Studies Teacher Ruth Terry, and Sixth Grade Teacher Verna Green.
Mrs. Green started her career at SCA in their first year- 1989- as a substitute teacher. The next year, she was hired as a full-time teacher. This is was 27th year at SCA, however it will be her last year as a full-time teacher. She plans to continue her SCA career part-time in the Resource Services Department in the fall.
“I cannot tell you how blessed I was to read the stories and comments our parents, students, faculty, and staff shared in the nomination process,” said SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson. “We are pleased to have one of our original teachers as our 2017 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Green is truly the backbone of our teaching staff and has impacted hundreds of students over the years. Her students know that she loves them. Many of our Alumni love to come back just to visit Mrs. Green!”
Mrs. Green was given a plaque, a designated parking place at SCA, and monetary award. SCA’s Teacher of the Year will be submitted to the Great Plains Alliance of Christian Schools (GPACS) meeting for the GPACS Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced in late August or early September.
