Suspicious fire under investigation

Suspicious fire under investigation

On Saturday, June 24, 2017, at approximately 7:00 a.m. the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1200 block of SE 11th Street. A neighbor reported smoke coming from the roof. A person walking by noticed smoke coming from the roof. They knocked on the door to see if anyone was home with no response.

from Lee's Summit Fire Department

When the fire department arrived, light smoke was visible from a two-story, single family residence.

Firefighters forced entry into the house and extinguished a fire in the living room and kitchen. A search of the smoke-filled house confirmed that it was unoccupied. On scene investigation confirmed that the family was out of town and accounted for. LSFD crews had the fire under control by 7:24 a.m.

The fire caused extensive damage to the inside of the home and a portion of the attic.

LSFD crews found conditions that indicated a possible suspicious fire and requested the LSFD Fire Investigation Unit and detectives from the Lee’s Summit Police Department. Investigators from both departments determined that a burglary had occurred and the house had been set on fire to destroy evidence of the crime.

The investigation into the fire and burglary is ongoing, if you have any information regarding the incident please contact Detective Aaron Ides at (816) 969-1668.
