A new youth theater program is bringing another production onto the local stage.
The Bright Lights Institute team, directed by A.J. and Jacob Valle, will open "Godspell" the weekend of July 28 and 29 on the stage at Summit Park Church in Lee's Summit. Admission is free for both shows — 7:30 p.m., Friday July 28 and 11 a.m., Saturday July 29.
Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, "Godspell" draws from a variety of theatrical traditions — music, dance, pantomime, charades and even rap — to retell the parables of Jesus for a modern audience. Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by the Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Stephen Schwartz ("Wicked", "Pocahontas", "Prince of Egypt"), "Godspell" is one of the biggest Broadway successes of all time.
