Junkluggers, LS Social Services team up for back-to-school drive

It may be early July, but Lee’s Summit Social Services is already thinking “Back to School” to help those in need in and around Lee’s Summit.

In the spirit of giving back, Junkluggers of Kansas City has pledged to join forces with LSSS to make sure their annual “Back to School Shop” is a rousing success.

Junkluggers of Kansas City has pledged to assist Lee's Summit Social Services with its annual Back to School Shop program.

Each year, Lee’s Summit Social Services opens its Back to School Shop to families in need of vital items for the upcoming school year.

In an effort to collect at least 100 items for Lee’s Summit Social Services, Junkluggers is offering a 10 percent discount to any customer that donates a needed item to the Back to School Shop. On Tuesday, Aug. 1, Junkluggers owner Seth Kakuske will deliver the items to Lee’s Summit Social Services, 108 SE 4th Street in downtown Lee’s Summit, during the heart of the Back to School drive.

The Back to School Shop opens July 24 and runs through Aug. 11. Junkluggers will be asking for donations of the following items that are in highest demand for families in need:

  • Middle school/high school backpacks
  • Ear buds/headphones for Chromebooks
  • Dry erase markers (preferably black)
  • 1-inch and 2-inch 3-ring binders

“This is our opportunity to help Lee’s Summit Social Services and our community,” Owner Seth Kakuske said. “Everyone does a drive in the winter, so this was a fantastic opportunity to conduct a giving campaign during a different part of the year.

Kakuske said he is also seeking businesses to partner with that will house donation boxes for these items during the drive.

“We’re going to make this a true community effort: citizens, businesses and those in need,” he said.

Kakuske, who lives with his family in Lee’s Summit, has a kindergartener and third grader and certainly understands the needs of school supplies this time of year.

“This drive offers a chance for us to help an organization that provides so much to our communities,” he said.

Junkluggers of Kansas City celebrates its one-year anniversary July 12 and serves the entire Metro area.
