Summit Theatre Group’s sixth season on stage begins with a familiar ogre, ends with a murder mystery and, in between, features performances for all audiences and ages.
Shrek the Musical kicks off the 2018-19 season, Aug. 10-12. Directed by Lee’s Summit West High School theater teacher Brad Rackers, the musical is a Tony-award winning fairy tale adventure, bringing all the familiar characters from the films to the local stage. Shrek the Musical will take the stage at Lee’s Summit West.
In October, STG will feature Measure to Measure, the story by William Shakespeare that addresses many of today’s cultural issues, including injustice, abuse of power and sexual harassment.
The holiday season will kick off in December with Not Another Christmas Letter! The Musical. A Kansas City-area premier, this original music-comedy unfolds a wild series of comedic vignettes with just four players bringing more than 45 characters to life that celebrates everything that may drive us crazy about Christmas.
Broadway musical Disaster! is also a KC-area premier. The lyrical performance will include some of the most memorable songs from the 1970s, including “Hot Stuff,” “Knock on Wood,” and “Hooked on a Feeling.” Set in 1979, a true cast of characters is lining up for the opening of a floating casino and disco and enjoying a night of boogie before calamity strikes.
In the summer of 2019, the season wraps up with The Butler Did It. A comedy that parodies nearly every English mystery play ever written.
Each performance after Shrek the Musical will be performed at the MCC-Longview Cultural Arts Center, 500 SW Longview Road in Lee’s Summit.
“Summit Theatre Group is presenting another varied season,” STG President and founder Ben Martin said. “It has a little something for everyone, from Shrek to Shakespeare, holiday fun to disaster movies and then a great comic mystery.”
