SMART clubs are offered at Lee’s Summit High School, Lee’s Summit North High School and Lee’s Summit West High School. The SMART clubs focus on providing activities that are alcohol, tobacco and other drug free for their members as well as all students at their schools.
SMART clubs also work to educate students, parents and community members about alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues.
The May 14 all-day leadership training included keynote speaker Officer Darnell Sims of the Lee’s Summit Police Department. Additional presentations focused on building leadership skills by increasing strong character traits such as perseverance, respect, responsibility and cooperation.
The 40 SMART members attending heard an overview of events hosted by LSNHS Bronco SMART during this school year. LSHS Tiger SMART members presented information about suicide prevention and awareness, and LSWHS Titan SMART members shared their research about a local nonprofit that encourages teens to volunteer during the summer. In addition, Schyler Turner, a LSHS junior, recited her award-winning oratory about overcoming adversity.
SMART members also assembled 60 kits for homeless persons that were donated to Uplift, a local organization that supports Kansas City’s homeless.
