1,000 crayons? Local business aims to arm Coldwater with supplies
A thousand crayons, pencils, pens, glue sticks and rulers? A local business is dreaming big with a school supply drive this week.
Kids and families in need will be the recipients of vital school supplies to start the 2018-19 school year thanks to a partnership between Budget Blinds of Lee’s Summit and Coldwater of Lee’s Summit.
At the June 22 Fourth Friday Art Walk in downtown Lee’s Summit, Jim, Debbie and Courtney Stoddard, owners of Budget Blinds, are encouraging donations of a range of school supplies that will then be distributed through Coldwater, a local nonprofit that works daily with families in need in and around Lee’s Summit.
Coldwater will supply children in the highest-needs area of Lee’s Summit, including Sage Crossing, with these supplies to help them get their school year started off on a positive note.
Among the supplies they need are: glue sticks, ear buds, pencils, paper, crayons, markers, dry-erase markers, red pens, 3-ring binders, backpacks and scissors.
“We want to make sure they have the basic needs to start school with,” said Monte Stull, Community Director for Coldwater. “The kids want to all be on the same page as the other kids. It is great to start school with new school supplies and not a hand-me-down and supplies used last year. It’s like new shoes. It’s amazing how important it is to those kids.”
School supplies for all grade levels will be accepted, with an emphasis on grade school needs.
Stull said any monetary funds collected will be used to fill in on school supply purchases as well, and that Coldwater will hand out the supplies during the last summer barbecue event it holds for kids and families at Sage Crossing.
“Opening our doors to community events means opening our doors to giving local, worthy causes,” Debbie Stoddard said. “As a small business, we feel compelled to continually give back. And we’re looking forward to helping kids in Lee’s Summit start the school year the right way.”
The Fourth Friday event runs 5-8 p.m. Friday in downtown Lee’s Summit.
