The Lee’s Summit Fire Department received phone notification of an automatic fire alarm at International Children’s Academy at 12:02 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24.
When the pumper assigned to investigate the alarm arrived on scene at 12:09, they reported smoke showing and upgraded the incident to a first alarm or working fire. Upon crew entry to the structure, fire was identified in a space between the ceiling and roof. Interior conditions rapidly worsened to the point that crews had no visibility.
The decision was made by the Incident Commander to have crews back out of the structure because of building size, construction type, location of the fire and risk of potential roof collapse.
Soon after crews exited, the fire had burned through the roof. The fire was then brought under control and extinguished. The structure and contents sustained significant damage.
The Lee’s Summit Fire Department operations were supported by the Lee’s Summit Police Department who secured the perimeter while fire crews were working to control the fire.
The investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire is currently ongoing.
