Local resident rallies bikers, supporters to 'Ride for Lee’s Summit'

A local resident is putting on his helmet and encouraging bikers and community members to take a ride for a local charity. Robert Buchanan, a Lee’s Summit resident and military veteran, is organizing the Saturday, Aug. 31 Ride for Lee’s Summit, a 100-mile bike ride spanning from Lee’s Summit to Pleasant Hill, Lexington, north of Oak Grove and finishing at Fringe Beerworks in downtown Lee’s Summit.

LS Social services fielding increased calls as federal government shutdown continues

As some of the more than 800,000 federal workers going unpaid reside in the cities of Lee’s Summit, Lone Jack, Lake Lotawana and Greenwood, local assistance agency Lee’s Summit Social Services is bracing for the likely uptick in requests for food and financial assistance. In fact, in just the last week, LSSS Executive Director Matt Sanning said his organization has received 15 requests for assistance from furloughed government workers.

Junkluggers, LS Social Services team up for back-to-school drive

In an effort to collect at least 100 items for Lee’s Summit Social Services, Junkluggers is offering a 10 percent discount to any customer that donates a needed item to the Back to School Shop. On Tuesday, Aug. 1, Junkluggers owner Seth Kakuske will deliver the items to Lee’s Summit Social Services, 108 SE 4th Street in downtown Lee’s Summit, during the heart of the Back to School drive.
